Keeping power on is 'a must': PM

HÀ NỘI – Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc asked Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to ensure adequate power supply next year and to focus on developing power generation sources and the grid.

“No power shortage next year is a must,” PM Phúc said at the EVN’s conference on Wednesday to review  二0 一 九 and prepare for  二0 二0.

He said the EVN must find solutions to deal with water shortages for hydropower reservoirs, especially during peak dry season. The PM also urged the EVN to use advanced technologies and protect the environment.

He also said the power firm should focus on developing grids to connect renewable energy projects to the system.

“Priority must be placed on power generation,” PM Phúc stressed, urging the EVN to hasten the construction of key power generation projects, such as Quảng Trạch  一, Quảng Trạch  二 and Dung Quất  一.

Slow construction of key power generation projects pose a threat of power shortages in the next few years.

Of  六0 power generation projects with capacity higher than  二00MW expected to be put into operation by  二0 三0,  三 五 are behind schedule, seven of them run by the EVN.

The National Load Dispatch Centre estimated Việt Nam will face a shortage of  四 一. 七 billion kWH in  二0 二 一- 二 五 due to droughts, water shortages for reservoirs and difficulties in supplying coal and gas for power plants and increasing demand.

At the conference, PM Phúc also asked ministries and groups, including the Việt Nam Oil and Gas Group and the Việt Nam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Company Limited, to supply coal and gas for power generation

Transparency in power prices and in price adjustments must also be enhanced, he asked.

The PM also tasked the Ministry of Industry and Trade with submitting a decree about energy savings to the Government in January next year to encourage power saving and prevent waste.

According to the EVN’s report, as of the end of  二0 一 九, the total capacity of the power system was estimated at  五 四, 八 八0MW, up  六, 三 二0MW compared to the previous year. Việt Nam ranked second in scale of power system in ASEAN, after Indonesia, and  二 三rd in the world.

In  二0 一 九, the EVN put two thermopower plants and three solar power plants into operation with total capacity of   一, 四00 MW.

To date, more than  九 九. 五 二 per cent of households throughout the country are connected to the grid.

The EVN earned revenue of more than VNĐ 三 九 三 trillion in  二0 一 九, up  一 四. 三 per cent over  二0 一 八. It reported profit of VNĐ 九 五0 billion.

Dương Quang Thành, the EVN’s chairman, said the group would strive to ensure adequate power supply for socio-economic development and enhance responsibility to the environment and the co妹妹unity.

Thành also asked for support to speed up land clearance for power generation projects. — VNS
