At the SharePoint Conference 2012 in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced the upcoming release of a new SharePoint app for Windows Phone mobile devices. The app, SharePoint Newsfeed for Windows Phone, gives SharePoint users  the ability to stay connected with colleagues, post to newsfeeds, follow other users, work on followed documents, and comment on discussions.

The app makes full use of SharePoint’s social media capabilities with common features like @mentions of other colleagues, use of #hastags, and the ability to “like” fellow users’ posts. The app is designed specifically for use with SharePoint 2013 and is not compatible with previous versions. Any mobile device running Windows Phone 7.5 or Windows Phone 8 should be able to take advantage of it.

In addition to the SharePoint NewsFeed app, Microsoft will also release SkyDrive Pro for Windows 8 and iOS users.  Windows Phone 8 users can get SkyDrive Pro now. SkyDrive Pro is similar to the consumer SkyDrive service except that it is designed to work with Microsoft’s business applications, including SharePoint 2013 and Office 365.

For SharePoint customers, this new app is just one of many exciting innovations coming to the new SharePoint 2013 community. “The new SharePoint is a pivotal release that not only delivers an amazing amount of innovation today, it lays the foundation for exciting new innovations in the future,” said Microsoft corporate vice president Jeff Teper.

SharePoint Newsfeed is currently available for users of Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8. Microsoft will reportedly release versions for Windows 8 and iOS devices in 2013. Users interested in trying it out can download the app for free from the Windows Phone app store.
